Underwater Metal Detecting Tips For Beginners

Underwater Metal Detecting Tips

This article is contains my Underwater Metal detecting Tips. Metal detecting underwater isn’t easy but it is a lot of fun. I tend to spend a lot of my time in the summer wading down streams and rivers looking for treasure. Sometimes I get lucky but most of the time I just enjoy seeing nature at its best.

Underwater Metal Detecting Requires Time and Patients

I have been lucky over the course of 6 or so years. One of my oldest coins was found in the water as well as my first silver half dollar. But I love finding homemade fishing weights that are always different and very unique. Once in a while you will find a gold ring or two.

Basic Underwater Metal Detecting Tips

This is a quick and simple metal detecting video showing river hunting beginners what to look for and what to expect using metal detectors in a river, a stream etc. The metal detector of choice for this video is my Garrett AT Pro aka the Mental Metal AT Pro. It is 100% water and one of the most reliable machines ever made by Garrett. Of course thats my humble opinion.

Recommended Tips You Need to Know.

I only provided a few in the video (above) but there are plenty more to share. Here are a few more that I would recommend in addition to the tips in the video.

  • Tether both your metal detector and your underwater pin-pointer to your belt. There were many times where my pin-pointer and metal detector where floating down stream. Luckily it wasn’t fast moving water. I got lucky!
  • If you are dragging a kayak or boat behind, tether the boat to your belt or tie it off to a tree. If you don’t you might be missing a boat!
  • Take plenty of water and food along. Water detecting really dehydrates you but because you are in the water you don’t realize it.
  • Sunscreen. Never leave home without it. If you are fair skinned like me you can’t apply enough sunscreen.
  • Take a snorkel mask or goggles for those targets that will require some shallow diving.
  • Where boots that cover your ankles. I see a lot inexperienced detectorists say they use Crocs or old sneakers. If you aren’t hunting river beds then I would agree but if you are hunting rocky river beds, some of those rocks are sharp and they will cut and bruise you. Use common sense with your footwear.
  • Use a staple gun and staple the bottom of your soles (only if you are using boots). The staples will give you a tremendous amount of additional traction.

Hopefully these additional tips will give you more enjoyment out of your underwater metal detecting experience and provide you the best metal detecting experience overall.

Underwater Metal Detecting Gear.

Below you will find a list of the metal detecting gear I own and use related to my Garrett AT Pro. I use this gear almost 100% of the time when I am underwater metal detecting. I’ve included a link to Amazon for each piece of gear so you can check the price for each.

You don’t need everything listed below. You obviously need a metal detector and headphones that can go underwater. You probably should consider a bag and a water proof pin-pointer. You will probably want to carry some type of digging tool to move those big rocks and maybe a little trowel or dull knife to pick through the cracks in the bedrock. Other than those items I just mentioned, that’s all you really need to get started.

The Underwater Gear I use:

Garrett Pro Pointer AT
Garrett Camo Diggers Pouch
Garrett Edge Digger with Sheath for Belt Mount
Garrett Submersible Headphones
Garrett AA Battery Holder For AT Pro
Garrett 5×8″ DD Coil for AT Pro and AT Gold
Garrett AT PRO Metal Detector (Bonus Pack)
Garrett AT PRO Camo Bag (Package)
Garrett AT Pro Armrest Strap
Garrett AT PRO Armrest Cuff and Stand with Armrest PAD
GOOP All Purpose Adhesive
Knee Pads

Mental Metal

Here is a little about me. I started this hobby back in the early 90's. My first detector was a Whites 5900 DI. I found enough clad the first summer (around $400) to pay it off. Then I stopped detecting... Fortunately, I didn't give it up for good. Here I am 20+ years later and I've rediscovered the joy of metal detecting.
