Metal Detecting Find of The Month: September 2020

Each month our Facebook group Metal Detecting Maryland (MDM) holds a contest to vote for our Find of The Month. The MDM Board selects 10 or more photos from the dozens of photos that are submitted for our Wall of Fame contest. The winning photos are voted on by our MDM members to determine which photo/item wins the title “Find of The Month“. To learn more about the contest click here.

September Votes Have Been Counted!

Of the 15 photos chosen for the Wall of Fame, only one was voted as our September Find of The Month. The item that received the most votes is this beautiful 1821 Gold Wedding Band featured below. The ring was recovered by our one and only.

Whats The Story Behind The Find?

Lilo explains, “After Baltimore city detecting season began in September, I headed out on September 24 to one of my favorite parks in the city. This was an area that had yielded Indian head pennies and oldies in the past, but I had been through it many times. My first good target was a 1907 V nickel, then came a lead disc about the same size as a nickel, in between many there were many trash targets. After about an hour and ready to head back to the truck is when I went for a deep signal 6-8 inches, my Garrett AT PRO reads these no matter what the target is as a high tone. I cut my plug and dug a little deeper and I could see the yellow band and bright as day. At this point I knew it was gold, little did I know it was a dated piece, to my amazement turned out to be a wedding band dated Dec 3rd 1821.

Lets Find Out More About Lilo

How long have you been metal detecting?
Lilo: I have been detecting 5 years

What is your favorite metal detector and what do you like about the machine the most?
Lilo: My favorite machine is the Garrett AT Pro, to be honest this is my third machine, the other two were lower end detectors, What I love about the AT Pro is that its a turn on and go machine, and also goes deep. I’ve pulled coins and coin size relics from 8-12 inches without any trouble. Last but not least the price, its affordable.

Who inspired you to get into metal detecting?
Lilo: What inspired me into detecting was in part coin collecting, I been collecting coins and paper money for the past 20 years. The other part I would say was growing up in rural Mexico, I lived in a very small ranch surrounded by old abandoned Haciendas. The ranch were I grew up dates to the early 1700s.

What do you consider to be your best find metal detecting?
Lilo: Probably the most difficult question, If I had to choose one. I say my 1847 1/4 Real found in Mexico couple years ago because I love silver coins and this thing is so small, much smaller than a Trime/3 cent piece.

Here is a little about me. I started this hobby back in the early 90's. My first detector was a Whites 5900 DI. I found enough clad the first summer (around $400) to pay it off. Then I stopped detecting... Fortunately, I didn't give it up for good. Here I am 20+ years later and I've rediscovered the joy of metal detecting.
