Metal Detecting Maryland and Mental Metal Detecting would like to congratulate the May 2019 Digger of The Month
Doug Smith
During the month of May, Doug not only found this amazing George Washington button he found 2 other ones as well! Most of us in the metal detecting community keep a bucket list of items we would love to find. Many of us have a GW Button on our list. Not very often do you see a button like this and especially in this condition. These 3 buttons are a spectacular find. Thanks Doug for sharing them with us.
More About Doug in His Own Words.
How long have you been metal detecting?
Doug: 6 years.
What was the first machine you ever used?
Doug: Garrett AT Pro
What is your favorite metal detector and what do you like about the machine the most?
Doug: It’s a toss up right now between the XP Deus and the Minelab Equinox 800. I like the Deus for it’s lite weight and wireless construction, I bought the Minelab because of it’s reputation for doing very well in the salt water (I haven’t had the opportunity to try that yet).
Who inspired you to get into metal detecting?
Doug: No one in particular, I’ve had an interest in it since I was about 8 or 9 when my friend Clay’s dad bought a Whites Coin Master and we would take it out around where we lived. One day I was following behind Clay as he was detecting and I spotted a coin right on the surface, it turned out to be a 1893 Columbus Exposition Half Dollar.
What do you consider to be your best find metal detecting?
Doug: Hard to say, I’ve had several bucket list finds. there’s a tie for first: the three GW buttons and my 1796 Draped bust dime, next would be my 1793 Half Cent, then there would be the US belt plate that I gave to the property owner, and the eagle breast plate that I still have (from a different property), lastly would be the 1904 Morgan Silver Dollar I found.
What is your favorite type of detecting (relic, coin shooting, water etc.)?
Doug: Colonial and early American relic hunting
Name 5 items you would like to find in 2019?
Doug: A gold coin, Rattle Snake button, first year issue of any US coin, State and pattern coins (Nova Constellatio, Fugio)
Do you have other social media links, channels etc. you want to share on your page?
Doug: No
