July Find of The Month

Each month our Facebook group Metal Detecting Maryland (MDM) holds a contest to vote for our Find of The Month. The MDM Board selects 10 or more photos from the dozens of photos that are submitted for our Wall of Fame contest. The winning photos are voted on by our MDM members to determine which photo/item wins the title “Find of The Month“. To learn more about the contest click here.

Our July Votes Are In!

Of the 13 photos chosen for the Wall of Fame, only one was voted as our Find of The Month. The item that received the most votes is this American Civil War U.S. Bit Boss featured below. This amazing relic was found by our member:

Jason Morgan

Whats The Story Behind The Find?

Jason together with his wife, daughter, Alan Dodson, and Juan Ramos (both MDM members) were out for a short hunt in a location known for civil war activity. The temperature that day was so hot that they were only able to hunt for a couple of hours. Towards the end of the hunt is when Jason walked over a U.S. Bit Boss with his Garrett AT Max. Congratulations Jason!

Here is more about Jason

How long have you been metal detecting?
Jason: I went along with my dad as a kid. Then probably around the age of 12 I started taking his machine out on my own!

What is your favorite metal detector and what do you like about the machine the most?
Jason: I’d have to say my favorite machine is my AT MAX . I broke down and bought it last year for my 40th birthday and it has been an excellent machine. It has great depth with the NEL Tornado coil. I have gone over places that I know I’ve hunted out and that machine proves me wrong.

Who inspired you to get into metal detecting?
Jason: I’d say 100% my father was my inspiration as was my grandfather was his. I’m a 3rd generation detectorist starting from the early 60’s.

What do you consider to be your best find metal detecting?
Jason: My best find to date I would have to say is the sword belt plate.

What is your favorite type of detecting (relic, coin shooting, water etc.)?
Jason: What mostly I go after are old home sites. Whether it be just a divot in the ground or just a stone foundation residence. I always had a saying ” If these walls could talk”. What they seen or what they’ve been through. Sure enough what you find in the ground tells the story.

Name 5 items you would like to find in the future.
Jason: What I’d like to knock off the bucket list this year is….any capped bust silver.. revolutionary war button.. 2 reale.. cannon ball .. and the ever so elusive gold coin.

Do you have other social media links, channels etc. you want to share on your page?
Jason: Last year I started a Facebook page called “History Rescue” with my digging buddy Jeff Johnson. We post most of our finds on there for people to see. Check out History Rescue on Facebook.

Mental Metal

Here is a little about me. I started this hobby back in the early 90's. My first detector was a Whites 5900 DI. I found enough clad the first summer (around $400) to pay it off. Then I stopped detecting... Fortunately, I didn't give it up for good. Here I am 20+ years later and I've rediscovered the joy of metal detecting.
