Garrett Metal Detectors has a long history of providing top notch metal detectors and service to its customer base for over 50 years. Garrett’s new APEX metal detector will be revealed on May 15th 2020. Garrett is claiming that their new metal detector will be lightweight and require no batteries.
Lets read between the lines and try to determine what Garrett’s new APEX is all about.
The Garrett APEX Will Be “Lightweight and Won’t Need Batteries”.
For now, lightweight and no batteries are the only clues Garrett provided in a teaser video they produced back on April 10th 2020 titled “Ascend to the Apex“. To see the video click here.
A lot of speculation has begun about this new metal detector. Many Garrett owners of the AT Series are hoping for a new more advanced version of their AT Pro/Gold/Max.
But many are now thinking that the APEX will be more of a beginner machine to intermediate metal detector and could be a face lift for their Ace series of metal detectors. No one will know for certain until May 15th.
Garrett APEX Video Feedback.
Feedback From The Garrett APEX Video has been mostly positive but I doubt Garrett would let too many negative comments to surface from within the comments section of the video itself. After all, a smart marketing tactic is to generate or hype up the interest well in advance of a release date. Garrett appears to be doing exactly that.
However, there is a significant number of dislikes for the video. But it is hard to tell why viewers are choosing to dislike the video.
Who or What is The APEX Likely Competing Against?
If we look closely at the video, Garrett is pinning the APEX up against a Garrett Ace metal detector. This single fact alone makes many believe or speculate that the APEX will be more of an upgrade to their Ace series of detectors.
For several years Garrett has done really well with their entry-level Ace series of metal detectors. But recently their market domination in this space may have taken a hit.
If we take a look at Garrett’s competition over the last couple of years there are 2 companies that have really stepped up and provided two new and more advanced metal detectors at a very reasonable price. Those 2 companies are Minelab and Nokta.
In 2019 both companies released new metal detectors that stole some of the entry-level market with Minelab’s Vanquish series and Nokta Makro’s Simplex metal detectors. Both companies targeted the entry-level to intermediate users.
Both companies are getting positive reviews for these machines and especially their price point. The Vanquish and Simplex can be purchased for well under $400. Here is a brief breakdown of what you get for the money.
Minelab’s Vanquish (540)
The Vanquish (540) offers the following:
- Multi-IQ (Multi Frequency)
- Easy to use
- Lightweight
- Wireless (capable)
- Waterproof (coil-stem only)
- Bluetooth Audio
- Low Cost (around $370)

Nokta Makro Simplex
The Simplex offers the following:
- Easy to use
- Good Target Separation
- Compact
- 100% Waterproof

For what you are getting for the price these two metal detectors, both Minelab and Nokta are probably taking some of markets sales away from Garrett. In the past, Garrett did really well in the entry level metal detector market with their Ace series.
Garrett’s APEX Will Need to be Something Special.
Fans of Garrett Metal Detectors are really expecting something special with APEX. Garrett’s last major release of a metal detector was the AT Max which was nothing more than their AT Pro with a few extra bells and whistles. Many Max owners today enjoy using the their machine while others weren’t too impressed and sought out other metal detectors. One of them is the Minelab Equinox.
If the APEX is a repackaged Ace with wireless and possibly a new look, that may be enough to bring back some of their entry level customers. But many long time Team Garrett owners are wondering whats next for their AT series of detectors.
Will there be a new Garrett metal detector coming to the market that can compete with Minelab’s Equinox. Can Garrett to take their successful AT Series of detectors and bring them into 2020’s? Only time will tell. Garrett’s new APEX will be revealed May 15TH. Will you be watching?
